Itching Ears
We like to think we want to be challenged. We want to grow, learn, and become better versions of ourselves. But if we’re honest, most of us also really like being told we’re right.
And we live in a world that makes that incredibly easy. Don’t like what one pastor says? Find another church. A podcast challenges you? There’s another one waiting in your feed. The news makes you uncomfortable? Change the channel. We can surround ourselves with voices that confirm almost anything we already want to believe.
Apparently, that’s not a new problem. In 2 Timothy, we find a remarkably modern-sounding warning about people with “itching ears” who gather teachers around themselves to tell them exactly what they want to hear. Eventually, the writer says, they wander away from truth and toward myths.
And the conversation about 2 Timothy Chapters 3 and 4 takes off from there.
